A predominantly Asian fraternity at the University of Oklahoma has gone viral after a video showed them strolling to Doja Cat's "Kiss Me More."
In the viral video, members of Tau Kappa Omega appeared to move in unison in a line through a crowded auditorium. Tau Kappa Omega was established in 2002 at OU as the first Asian interest fraternity, according to the organization's website.
“It is an organization for anyone with an interest in the history, philosophy, and culture of Asia seeking to learn personal leadership skills and form lifelong relationships. The fraternity seeks to help individuals realize their potential as contributing members of society by first understanding themselves,” a statement from the fraternity reads.
At least 2 Black men appeared to be among the Tau Kappa Omega members strolling in the video. Still, a number of social media users accused the predominately-Asian fraternity of cultural appropriation.
“Black Americans are the most imitated ethnic group in the world to date,” a Twitter user wrote alongside the video.
“I’m sick of it. I’m sick of our culture being used for likes and social media engagements when none of these cultures like us at all. It’s sickening,” another person chimed in.
“Stepping is a part of our African culture that members of the Divine Nine incorporated as part of our African American experience. Members of this organization are treating it like some new dance they just halfway and clumsily learned. #mess,” a third social media user pointed out.
